The Applicability of Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences as an Effective Tool for the teaching of English Grammar
Samenvatting
This research paper explores the effects of teaching English grammar with the help of materials and activities based on the concept of Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences. The main aim of the research was to find a way of developing teaching materials which would be suitable for each particular class, instead of adopting the more traditional approach 'one-size-suits-all'. My hypothesis was that developing grammar teaching materials based on the strongest intelligence in each class should help the majority of the students to understand the grammar item better, as well as increase their engagement and motivation. The results obtained in several classes suggest that use of these 'tailor-made' materials appears to be effective for increasing the level of interaction, as well as beneficial for the students' knowledge of grammar. Even though a more extensive piece of research would be necessary for validating the results further, I believe I can conclude that the MI theory can serve as a useful tool for increasing overall effectiveness of grammar teaching in a second language classroom.
