Introduction: The aim of this study was to examine how physical therapists are taking cognizance of psychomotor therapy.
Theoretical border: Psychomotor therapy is a treatment for patients with psychological problems targeting body experience and behavioral changes. Physical therapy is aplied when patients experience physical complaints. The psychomotor therapy is focussed on psychological problems then physical therapy is.
Methods: There was a focusgroup and there were interviews contucted among the sample. Interviews were recorded with an audiorecorder and summarized in text.
Results: Physical therapists think that psychomotor therapy is an addition to their practice. They also believe that they don’t have the skills to treat patients with psycological problems.It was also found that the term psychomotor therapy does not cary the same weight as the term psychologist.
Discussion: The focusgroup was not usefull for datacollection. Therefore individual interviews were conducted.
Conclusion: Physical therapists see psychomotor therapy as an addition to their practice. They admit not having the skills needed to treat patients with psychological problems. Physical therapists do see problems with having a psychomotor therapist in their practice. They suggest there are invoice problems with psychomotor treatments being paid by insurance companies and psychomotor therapists will have problems creating a fulltime job in clinical practices.
