Samenvatting

Motivation: It becomes more and more important to base a treatment on evidence which is obtained from doing research. Leekerweide started a psychomotor group treatment which is not ‘evidence-based’. The goal of this thesis is to answer the question if the performed treatment has contributed to the purpose of the treatment.
Method: The purpose of the treatment, based on a training to improve the defensibility, is to improve the group cohesion of a commune consisting of six mild mental retarded persons in at the age between seventeen en twenty years old. The development of the group stagnated, resulting in a strained atmosphere in the group. Two questionnaires, one for the clients and one for the accompaniment, measure the changes in the group cohesion caused by the treatment.
Theory: The theory of this thesis will describe the link between the mental retardation, the group dynamics and the psychomotor therapy in a group.
Conclusion: The results show that the treatment has contributed to a small improvement of the cohesion in the group. The treatment not yet succeeds to transfer the improvement seen within the psychomotor therapy, to improvement of behavior in the residence. For better result the environment has to be involved in the treatment.
