Aeolian Dune Dynamics at Kop van Schouwen Natura 2000 area
Aeolian Dune Dynamics at Kop van Schouwen Natura 2000 area
Samenvatting
This research investigates Aeolian sand transport in the dynamic dune area of Kop van Schouwen Meeuwenduinen, Netherlands. Despite previous studies, many aspects of sand transport in this region remain unexplored. This study aims to provide new insights into sand erosion and transport dynamics.
Two groups of samples were analyzed: sand collected from 31 sand catchers and additional samples gathered from the seashore and dunes. Both groups were sieved to determine particle size distributions, and the sand catchers' samples were also weighed to observe seasonal variations.
The study compared 10-year wind data with the period when the sand catchers were installed to understand the wind conditions influencing sand transport. Maximum hourly wind speeds and storm data were analyzed to assess their impact on sediment transport.
Key findings highlight that daily mean wind speed has the most significant influence on Aeolian sediment transport, positively correlating with the amount of sand transported. In contrast, maximum hourly wind speed and wind gusts exhibited a more complex relationship: while they sometimes increased sand transport, they also led to periods of decreased transport depending on specific conditions.
Additionally, particle size distribution curves of dune-gathered samples closely matched those from the sand catchers, suggesting that most Aeolian transport sand originates from the dunes.
Future studies should incorporate real-time wind measurements and sediment sensors to enhance data accuracy. Additionally, relocating sand catchers to various strategic points could provide a more comprehensive understanding of sand transport patterns. These findings provide valuable insights into the dynamics of sand transport in coastal dune areas. Understanding these processes is crucial for developing effective coastal management strategies and mitigating erosion impacts in similar regions worldwide.
