Leadership Relationships

Samenvatting

Practice development (PD) is ultimately about developing person-centred cultures that are also experienced as safe and effective by its beneficiaries – those experiencing and those providing care. This chapter considers how positioning leadership as an explicit relationship process in PD is needed to enable a focus on what matters to people and communities. It commences with an overview of relational leadership drawn from a PhD study that highlights transformational and person-centred leadership approaches. Five guiding lights for strengthening leadership in all settings are then discussed. The guiding lights study aimed to identify how to strengthen nursing, midwifery and allied health professionals’ leadership in all contexts (practice, education, research or strategy). The chapter concludes with an example of a person-centred leadership development programme, demonstrating how relational strategies enable and impact effective workplace cultures.
