End of March 2014, the Dutch Judo Federation has organized the second edition of the National Budodag in sport center Papendal. This event is in the sign of the three sports where the Dutch Judo Federation as authority takes care of the organization of: judo, jiu-jitsu and aikido (budo). It is a special event for young judokas, local authorities, owners of gyms, competitive athlete’s, referees, volunteers, judo teachers and all others who are well disposed with one of these three sports.

The Dutch Judo Federation is interested in the motives of the visitors. Besides that, this federation also wants to know what kind of impact this event has on the local economy. With the results of the research, information is being collected for an eventual next edition of the National Budodag.

Based on the above mentioned information, the next main question arise:
“What is the relationship between visitors motives and the impact on the local economy of the National Budodag 2014?”

By desk- and fieldresearch, the subquestions are answered which answer the main question. To research the visitors motives of the National Budodag, the Leisure Motivation Scale of Beard and Ragheb is used. On the basis of this model, there are 24 propositions made and added in the questionnaire.
The results is that the National Budodag is being visited mainly for intellectual and competency motives. Visitors are coming to gain knowledge and to develop skills.

To determine the economic impact of the National Budodag, the visitors are asked about their spending. In this study, the province Gelderland considered as the local economy. It is important by determine the economic impact that the spending’s are additional. This means that this spending’s occurred an extra impact for the economy and will not take place if the event wasn’t organized. The expenses of the organization are also needed to determine the economic impact. The economic impact of the National Budodag amounted to almost 29.000 euro and this is positive.

To bring the relationship between the visitor’s motives and the economic impact of the National Budodag, there has been looked at the average spending of visitors in combination with the visitor’s motives. The result is that the main motives why visitors visit the event, they also

The main question is divided into five sub-questions. The first three questions are answered on the basis of literature. BY various media channels is searched for an answer to these theoretical questions. De last two questions are answered on the basis of the research results.


The results of the research are generated by an online survey, also called quantitative research. 1.313 people have visited the event and these people are the population of the research. 647 people of the population are the sample taken at random. Eventually, three hundred people have completed the questionnaire. This number is 46% of the (selecte steekproef). The result says something about the whole population with a reliability of 95%.

This rapport shows three recommendations for the Dutch Judo Federation. The first recommendation is about the visitors. The advice is to do further research. This study will focus on the specifics needs of knowledge and skills the visitors would like to learn during the event.

The second recommendation is to modify the program for children under twelve years. At the second edition of the event, the program for kids was most of all playing games. These kids would also like to learn skills. The organization can link the games with learning specific sport skills.

The third and final recommendation is about the economic impact. The organization can focus more on the visitors who visit the event with intellectual and competency motives. The average expenditure is about twenty euro’s. It has a double effect on the motives and on the economic impact.
