Collaborating for co-researching: A multi-stakeholder case narrative of student nurses co-researching technology-supported care
Samenvatting
1. Introduction
Most western societies are currently faced with an ageing population, decreasing workforce and increasingly technology-supported care. Whilst digitalisation of healthcare and care technology developments are demonstrating their adequacy and benefits in replacing professionals for certain tasks, there are concerns that a dominant focus on economic and organisational metrics could depersonalise health and social care (Servaty et al., 2020, Kleiven et al., 2020; van der Zijpp, 2020). Collaboration between those developing, implementing and using care technology is therefore paramount if excellent care is to remain the shared goal.
Excellent care is safe, evidence-informed and person-centred. Holistic models of evidence-based practice emphasise the importance of using multiple sources of knowledge when providing care (Rycroft-Malone et al., 2004) and person-centred practice draws attention to the importance of personhood, self-determination and reciprocal respect and understanding among all engaged in the care relationship (McCormack et al., 2021). Such principles guided a collaborative research project between a Dutch nursing faculty and its partner health and social care organisations (van der Zijpp et al., 2022). Under the supervision of practice and academic mentors, student nurses collected data and constructed narratives illustrating the facilitators and barriers of excellent care when technology was used. Sharing these narratives with the care teams proved pivotal in identifying and enacting practice transformation – a long but necessary journey for innovative change to everyday practice (Churruca et al., 2019). The multi-stakeholder evaluation narrative of this project is presented in this article.
